Read the latest update from 44 South Shipping on progress with the new replacement vessel and preparations for the William Fraser’s first voyages.
Planning and design work for the new replacement ship is continuing as scheduled.
A major milestone has recently been reached with the completion of the vessel's livestock ventilation design. This system is designed to provide a safe and reliable airflow for animals during voyages and includes backup systems to ensure livestock welfare is maintained even in the event of a vessel breakdown.
Another important step, known as a towing tank test, was successfully completed in China. This testing helps confirm how the vessel will perform in the water and supports final design and fuel-efficiency decisions.
Construction is expected to begin with steel cutting later in September 2026.
The William Fraser is being prepared to operate as both a livestock carrier and a general cargo vessel.

Final approvals and sign-off are expected in mid-August.
The first voyage is expected to travel:
Auckland → Waitangi → Napier

A detailed sailing schedule is expected to be released in mid-August.
Following the inaugural voyage, the vessel is expected to operate regular services between Napier and the Chatham and Pitt Islands throughout September, with a focus on supporting livestock movements.
Initially, the William Fraser will transport cattle only.
The vessel is not yet approved to carry sheep, although this may be reviewed after the first voyages have been completed.
