Gorse continues to be a major pest on the Chatham Islands, impacting the environment as well as the economic productivity of local farms.
This initiative aims to support land occupiers to maintain and control gorse on their property; using herbicide. We have approximately $30,000 of herbicide to allocate.
The herbicide is available to all landowners and lessees of land on the Chatham Islands who can provide evidence of planned control activities and current Certified Handler Compliance Certification (e.g. Growsafe). The landowner or lessee is responsible for applying the herbicide or paying a contractor to do so on their behalf.
To apply, download the application form [PDF, 230 KB] and email the completed form to info@chathamislands.govt.nz or submit a printed copy to the Chatham Islands Council office at 13 Waitangi Tuku Road, Waitangi by Friday 30 January 2026.
All applications must be accompanied by supporting documents, including a map showing property boundaries and gorse distribution, and photographs of the area/s. A property check may be required on a case-by-case basis. If successful in herbicide allocation, control work should be completed by 30 April 2026.
