In accordance with the Local Electoral Amendment Act 2002 the Chatham Islands Council is required to review its representation arrangements.

At its ordinary monthly meeting held 23 March 2023, the Council agreed to stay with the status quo and resolved that the representation arrangements be approved for public consultation.

Reasons for these resolutions

  • It is the Council’s view that 9 elected members (Mayor and 8 Councillors) provide a good cross section of community representation and allows for a larger quorum to cover for absentees.
  • The community is too small to be split into wards for representation purposes.
  • There are no communities of interest large enough to warrant the establishment of a community board.
