The Council’s main role with stormwater drainage is to control the level of the Te Whanga lagoon by opening the Hikurangi channel as and when required.

This is necessary to protect productive land around the shores Te Whanga from inundation and to maintain the balance of marine life within the lagoon.

There is a small amount of urban stormwater reticulation within the Waitangi village.
