The Chatham Islands Council promotes community development through recreation, the arts and cultural heritage and to enhance the health and safety of the community.
The Council’s community services include:
- Arts and heritage, including the Chatham Islands Museum and library
- Community buildings
- Community support
- Housing
- Morgue and cemeteries
- Parks and reserves
- Public conveniences.
The Chatham Islands Housing Trust was formed in 2007, facilitated by the Council to co-operate with Housing New Zealand to address housing issues on the islands and providing affordable housing by:
- Building six houses
- Doing essential repairs on existing houses
- Financing first home buyers
- Holding a home ownership workshop.
