Our Community

The Chatham Islands Council promotes community development through recreation, the arts and cultural heritage and to enhance the health and safety of the community.


The Council’s community services include:

  • Arts and heritage, including the Chatham Islands Museum and library
  • Community buildings
  • Community support
  • Housing
  • Morgue and cemeteries
  • Parks and reserves
  • Public conveniences.

The Chatham Islands Housing Trust was formed in 2007, facilitated by the Council to co-operate with Housing New Zealand to address housing issues on the islands and providing affordable housing by:

  • Building six houses
  • Doing essential repairs on existing houses
  • Financing first home buyers
  • Holding a home ownership workshop.
