Land Transport

The Chatham Islands Council is responsible for the maintenance (sharing the costs with Land Transport New Zealand) of all public roads on the Chatham Islands, and the Council is responsible for all roading related assets – footpaths, kerbs, street lighting and signs.

Highlights from the 2007/08 annual report include, 100% of the maintenance work identified in the Annual Roading Strategy was undertaken. 41% of residents were satisfied or very satisfied with the roading network and no infestations of plant pests were found within the road reserve. There are no identified black or grey spots and areas of safety concern were addressed 100%.

Solid and Hazardous Waste Management

The Council provides refuse disposal sites at Te One, Kaingaroa and Owenga. Existing landfills are provided and maintained within 20km of at least 75% of the population. A Solid Waste Management Plan was adopted in June 2005 after full consultation with the community. Council received funding in 2008 from Government to implement the strategy approved.

Water Supply

The council operates a public water supply to consumers in the Waitangi township. The 2007/08 annual report shows there were two complaints received about the water supply (fewer than the target of no more than five complaints), the complaints were responded to immediately and there were no supply outages for greater than eight hours. 62% of consumers were satisfied or very satisfied with the water supply in Waitangi (compared to the target of 80%).

Stormwater

Council’s main role with stormwater drainage is to control the level of Te Whanga to protect productive land around its shores. The Te Whanga outlet was not required to be opened in 2007/08 to avoid flooding.

There is a small amount of urban stormwater reticulation within the Waitangi village.

Wastewater

Council operates a public wastewater scheme that serves all of Waitangi.

During the 2007/2008 year the scheme had 100% compliance with resource consent conditions for the collection, treatment and disposal of wastewater. No complaints were received by the Council.
