Infrastructure
Land Transport
The Chatham Islands Council is responsible for all public roads on the Chatham Islands (there are no State Highways). As owner of the roading network, Council has legal requirements to provide roads to a certain standard, and the Council is responsible for all roading related assets – footpaths, kerbs, street lighting and signs.
Highlights from the 2010/11 Annual Report include: 100% of the maintenance work identified in the Annual Roading Strategy was undertaken; 46% of residents were satisfied or very satisfied with the roading network and no infestations of plant pests were found within the road reserve; There are no identified black or grey spots rather areas of safety concern in the Annual Roading Strategy; and there were no motor vehicle accidents causing injury.
Solid and Hazardous Waste Management
The Council provides refuse disposal sites at Te One, Kaingaroa and Owenga. 75% of residents live within 20 km of the these refuse sites.

Water Supply
The Council operates a public water supply to consumers in the Waitangi village and provides fire fighting capability in the Waitangi village. The 2010/11 Annual Report shows there were no supply outages for greater than 8 hours. The Waitangi water supply complies with the New Zealand Drinking Standards (DWSN Z) 2008.
Stormwater
Council’s main role with stormwater drainage is to control the level of the Te Whanga lagoon by opening the Hikurangi channel as and when required. This is necessary to protect the land surrounding Te Whanga from inundation and to maintain the balance of marine life within the lagoon. Te Whanga outlet was opened once during 2010/11. No opening was required during 2009/10.
There is a small amount of urban stormwater reticulation within the Waitangi village.
Sewerage (Wastewater)
Council owns and operates the Waitangi village sewerage system.
During the 2010/2011 year, the scheme had 100% compliance with resource consent conditions other than minor non-compliance with nil or minor short-term adverse environmental effects. No incidences of non-compliance were reported. No complaints about odours or loss of service were received.
